Professor Andrew J Deeks is the President of University College Dublin, Ireland’s largest and most globally engaged university. He is responsible for the University’s overall direction, in consultation with the Governing Authority, and, in accordance with the Universities Act, manages and directs the University in its academic, administrative, financial, personnel and other activities. Under his leadership the University published a Strategy for 2015-2020, setting out a clear vision for ensuring UCD is known around the world as Ireland’s Global University, and this strategy is currently being successfully pursued.

He is highly respected for his research in structural mechanics, structural dynamics and dynamic soil structure interaction. His strong commitment to students is acknowledged in the awards he holds for teaching excellence and innovation. Previously, he was Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Science, at Durham University, where he led the development of their global strategy and extensive international and industry partnerships.

Sir David Adjaye is recognised as a leading architect of his generation. Born in Tanzania to Ghanaian parents, his broadly ranging influences, ingenious use of materials and sculptural ability have established him as an architect with an artist’s sensibility and vision. In 2000, he founded Adjaye Associates, which now has offices in London, New York and Accra with projects in the US, UK, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. His largest project to date, the $540 million Smithsonian Institute National Museum of African American History and Culture, opened on the National Mall in Washington DC in the fall of 2016 and was named Cultural Event of the Year by the New York Times.

Adjaye has amassed numerous accolades for his visionary work, including Design Miami/ Artist of the Year title in 2011, the Wall Street Journal Innovator Award in 2013 and the 2016 Panerai London Design Medal from the London Design Festival. In 2017, Adjaye received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II for services to architecture and was named one of TIME’s 100 most influential people.

Ann Beha is founder and Principal of Ann Beha Architects, a firm known for its exploration of heritage in dialogue with contemporary design. Marked by strong educational, cultural, and historical content, Ann Beha’s design work explores the sense of place and history, responding to each client’s mission in fresh, modern, and innovative ways. 

Based in Boston and working nationally, she has been Design Principal for planning and design projects at the University of Chicago, Princeton University, Cornell University Law School, Yale University, and MIT. Designs for the Arts include the new Student Life and Performance Center at the New England Conservatory of Music and dozens of museum, gallery, and library projects.

Ann Beha is a graduate of Wellesley College, and holds a Master of Architecture Degree from MIT and has served on the Visiting Committee for its School of Architecture and Planning. Ann Beha was a Loeb Fellow at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Design at the City College of New York. Ann Beha is also a member of Harvard University’s Design Advisory Panel.

Joe Berridge is an urban planner and city builder who has had an integral role in the development of some of the largest and most complex urban planning and regeneration projects in Canada, the US, the UK and Asia. 

He has been strategic planner for the development of the city centres of Manchester, Belfast and Cardiff and heavily involved in master planning for the waterfronts of Toronto, Singapore, Cork, London’s East Docklands, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Governors Island in New York City.

He has prepared campus master plans for the University of Manchester, and Waterloo, Queen's and Western University in Canada. Joe helped form the growth management and transportation plans for the Toronto region and is now planning the hub for Toronto Pearson International Airport.

He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto and a regular media commentator and writer on urban issues.

Hugh Campbell is Professor of Architecture, Head of Subject and Dean at the School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy, UCD. He has published widely in the fields of architecture, urban history, photography and urban visual culture. He also has experience of curating and exhibitions, notably as curator of the Irish Pavilion in the Venice Biennale 2008.

His major research projects include the five-volume Art and Architecture of Ireland (Yale UP) on which he was co-editor for volume four. He has two volumes forthcoming in 2019, a monograph on architecture and photography entitled Space Framed, and, in 2018, an edited book on Architecture Filmmaking. He is a board member of the AHRA (Architectural Humanities Research Association) of ARENA (Architecture Research in European Network Area) and is on the editorial boards of the journals Architecture and Culture, Folio and Places.

Mr. Dermot Desmond is Chairman of International Investment & Underwriting (IIU), which he founded in 1995. IIU is a private company, operating from the International Financial Services Centre in Dublin, specialising in direct equity investment and underwriting, funds management and capital markets trading.

IIU holds substantial investments in 50 or so companies, across different industries worldwide. Current investments include: Sandy Lane Hotel Barbados, Celtic Football Club, Global Betting Exchange Technologies, Daon, Broadhaven, Mountain Province, Kennady Diamonds, Barchester, Datalex, Venson, Jet Concierge Club, Pacemetrics, Titanic Quarter Development in Belfast, Rietumu Bank in Riga, The Sporting Emporium in Dublin and a Hotel/Marina Development Project in Canouan. Previous high profile investments include: London City Airport, Baltimore Technologies plc, Esat Digifone, Vivas Healthcare, Pembroke Capital and Today FM.

He is a board member of several companies, charities and educational bodies.

He is a sports enthusiast, a keen golfer and an eclectic collector of art and sculpture.

Professor Orla Feely is Vice President for Research, Innovation and Impact and a Professor of Electronic Engineering at University College Dublin. She holds a BE degree from University College Dublin and MS and PhD degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, where her PhD thesis won the DJ Sakrison Memorial Prize for outstanding and innovative research. While at UC Berkeley, she also won the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award. Her research is in the area of nonlinear circuits, and she has been awarded research grants and prizes from a number of national, international and industry sources.

Professor Feely is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Fellow of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Engineers Ireland and the Irish Academy of Engineering. She has served as Chair of the Irish Research Council, the EU Advisory Group on Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and the IEEE Technical Committee on Nonlinear Circuits and Systems. She is a member of the Higher Education Authority and a director of the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.

Professor David FitzPatrick is currently Principal of the College of Engineering & Architecture and Dean of Engineering at UCD and Provost at Beijing-Dublin International College. An Engineer by background, with bachelor’s degrees (BA, BAI) from the University of Dublin and a doctorate (DPhil) from the University of Oxford, he worked within the global orthopaedic industry for a decade before returning to Ireland to take up a position within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College Dublin. During the past two decades he has held leadership roles at School and College level in UCD, with a commitment to Internationalisation and Development.

Professor FitzPatrick has primary research interests in the fields of musculoskeletal modelling, anthropometrics medical device design and product development. His work has been recognised internationally (2003 – International Society of Biomechanics – ‘Clinical Biomechanics Award’) and nationally (2017 – Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland – Haughton Lecturer).

Professor Michael Monaghan graduated from UCD with a degree in veterinary medicine. After spending four years in veterinary practice in the UK and Ireland he rejoined his alma mater as a clinical lecturer. He became Dean of Veterinary Medicine in 1996 and successfully raised the funds for a new veterinary school on the Belfield campus. He led the school through the design process and worked closely with UCD Estate Services to bring the project to conclusion.

He was then appointed Project Director for the UCD Science development and, over a period of years, the UCD Science Centre was radically transformed with regard to its teaching and research facilities, extending to 30,000 square metres. The Veterinary Medicine and Science projects involved working closely with local and international designers. In 2012, he was appointed Principal of the College of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine and currently serves as Vice-President for Campus Development.

Sean Mulryan is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive of Ballymore, one of Europe’s leading property developers.

Renowned for great design and attention to detail, Ballymore has been at the forefront of design-led development for over thirty-six years.

The design process at Ballymore is led by Sean Mulryan himself. He is the creative force that drives Ballymore, and this has been recognised by his industry peers who have awarded Ballymore more than 40 awards in the past five years alone.

The architectural community relishes (with some trepidation) working with Sean and Ballymore. He pushes them out of their comfort zone while reminding them – quoting Leonardo Di Vinci – ‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication’.

Paul Thompson is the Vice-Chancellor of the Royal College of Art, the world’s number one art and design university as rated by the QS World University Ranking­­­s in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, and the only art and design university in the UK operating exclusively at postgraduate level.

From 2001 to 2009, Paul was Director of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York and from 1993 to 2001 he was Director of the Design Museum in London.

In each position, Paul has worked with leading architects: on the design of the original Design Museum London in 1989; the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in 2008; and three major projects at the RCA including the new building by Herzog & de Meuron on the Battersea campus, scheduled for completion for the 2020/21 academic year.

Paul is a Trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum and is on the Ashmolean Museum Board of Visitors. He is also Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Global Health Innovation at Imperial College, London.

The competition is being managed by Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC). Malcolm, an architect by training, founded the company after six years as Director of Design and Architecture at the British Council. He has worked with many of the world’s leading cultural institutions including the V&A; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation; the Royal College of Art; Mumbai City Museum; the British Library; and the Natural History Museum. Recent MRC competitions include those for Adelaide Contemporary; the UK Holocaust Memorial; Edinburgh’s Ross Pavilion; the M.K. Čiurlionis Concert Centre in Kaunas, Lithuania; and the Art Mill, Qatar.

Malcolm was on the Board of Historic Royal Palaces from 2005-2014, is a Trustee of English Heritage, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He joined the Sovereign Grant Audit Committee in June 2015.
