Expressions of Interest by 20th August 2012
We welcome EOIs from teams with a fascination for innovative construction techniques, an interest in the art of place-making and a practical approach to keeping disruption to a minimum. We are keen to identify and support emerging talent. A creative exploration of the project is strongly encouraged and teams should outline ideas on an additional programme of use(s) and user(s) that will give the café a unique identity that raises it above that of an everyday coffee shop. We encourage competitors to form interesting collaborations from a wide array of disciplines, including artists. Designers should be aware of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea's recently-announced cultural place-making strategy.
The project's key themes encompass:
- Exemplary design: innovative and striking
- Sustainable design which relates to the high-quality, historic setting
- Cultural place-making
- The needs of both locals and visitors
If selected the team's proposal for the building should include:
- A configuration to provide for circa 100 covers (60 outside and 40 inside)
- A dynamic covering for the outside users
- Strong indoor and outdoor connection
- Back of house facilities located underground to maximize activity and transparency
