Expressions of Interest by 31st August 2011

This is a two-stage competition. The first stage invites a wide Expression of Interest  from which a shortlist of five to seven teams will be selected.

We encourage EOIs from multi-disciplinary teams which should include, but are not limited to, landscape architects, architects, engineers, and quantity surveyors.  A creative and artistic exploration of the project is strongly encouraged and teams should outline their approach to working with an artist.
We also welcome input from groups with experience of delivering active and well-programmed public spaces that include short to medium term creative activities that promote regeneration.

Similarly the building(s) should incorporate a flexible approach with respect to their life-span and response to a potentially changing context.

The project’s key themes encompass:

  • design of international distinction
  • commercial viability – attracting visitors/appealing to operators
  • place-making reflecting the waterside character of the site
  • dynamism/vibrancy: like pleasure gardens such as Southbank or Tivoli
  • an inclusive ambience – speaking to the local community as well as visitors
  • valuing health and sport as part of the legacy of the 2012 Games
  • sustainable and innovative design and delivery

If selected the teams’ proposals should include:

A landscape masterplan with integrated building(s) comprising:

  • landscape masterplan that includes a public realm able to accommodate, at a minimum:
    • a range of event spaces for 500-30000 people
    • recreational activities
    • attractions
    • play facilities
    • food and drink
  • the building(s), to accommodate:
    • visitor facilities and ticketing for ArcelorMittal Orbit
    • indoor event space (including corporate hire)
    • café
    • office, administration and storage space
    • park facilities including public toilets
