The new Butrint National Park Visitor Center will be an exemplar of environmentally sensitive tourism. Scheduled to open in 2025, the Center will welcome visitors to the spectacular ancient city at Butrint — and be a gateway to the wider National Park.
The Center will help the Butrint Management Foundation manage rising visitor numbers for the World Heritage Site, recognised as Albania’s chief cultural attraction.
The Butrint National Park International Design Competition ran from September 2022 to April 2023 and attracted some of the world’s most talented architects. In the following gallery we present the concept designs of the finalists: Kengo Kuma & Associates (Japan), Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects (Finland), Philippe PROST / AAPP (France) and William Matthews Associates (UK).
On April 26, 2023 a jury of local and international experts, including Albania’s Minister of Culture, Elva Margariti, announced the Kengo Kuma & Associates team along with their Albanian partners CHwB Albania as the winners.
